Finally got around to shooting something that has been in my head for a while.
Kristie and I went to a local park where it would be extremely dark so that I could do some painting with light. I used my strobe to paint in areas of light from the right side of the frame. Each tree was lit separately but the shutter remained open for the entire shot.
After I started to get what I was looking for, a cop pulled into the park and wanted to know what was going on. He checked our ID’s and agreed to let us finish. He even waited in the parking lot, just in case another cop came by to kick us out.
After a few minutes of running blindly through the woods with my flash, we finally got the shot. We plan to print a 30×50 of it and hang it in our living room.

Chris,
It’s awesome.
Very cool. A good argument for always taking ID with you, even when you’re “just going to the park. Who’s gonna be around at this hour?” Cool that you got to finish your image too
@Brian McLernon – What is totally funny about that is that we actually didn’t take our ID’s. We really did feel like we weren’t going to need it so when the officer asked for them, we had to just give our SS#’s and he was fine with that.
Awesome and creative shot.
that is a GREAT image.
I have wanted to take an adorondack chair down to a lake around here, put it on the dock facing the lake and take a sunset shot…I had one like that and it was very effective…just the chair facing the water….anyway, thanks for sharing and you have inspired me to go ahead and do one, too.
It will be wonderful in your living room!
Very impressive creativity and execution. Well done.
Magical shot: well done! Makes me want to get off my butt and try some light painting finally.
That is a fantastic photo. Very nicely done and cool to read about the work that went into it.
